Why Tithing Isn't for Today

February 20268 min read

"If you don't tithe, you're robbing God." This statement has been used to manipulate believers for generations. It's time to dismantle this myth and step into the freedom of New Covenant giving.

The Origin of the Tithe

Tithing was part of the Mosaic Law—a system given to Israel to fund the Levitical priesthood and temple operations. It was not a suggestion; it was a legal requirement under the Old Covenant.

But here's the problem: we are not under the Old Covenant. The Law has been fulfilled in Christ. The temple has been destroyed. The Levitical priesthood has been replaced by the priesthood of all believers. The entire system that required the tithe no longer exists.

"Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes." — Romans 10:4

The Malachi 3 Manipulation

Pastors love to quote Malachi 3:8-10: "Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me... in tithes and offerings." But they conveniently ignore the context. Malachi was written to Israel under the Law. It was not written to the Church under grace.

Using Malachi 3 to guilt believers into tithing is like using Leviticus 19:19 to forbid wearing mixed fabrics. You can't cherry-pick Old Covenant commands and apply them to New Covenant believers.

What the New Testament Actually Says

The New Testament never commands believers to tithe. Not once. Instead, it teaches generous, cheerful, Spirit-led giving.

"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." — 2 Corinthians 9:7

Notice what's missing? A percentage. A quota. A threat of curses if you don't comply. Under grace, giving is not a law—it's a joy. It's not about obligation—it's about overflow.

The Curse of the Tithe

Many churches teach that if you don't tithe, you'll be cursed. But Galatians 3:13 says, "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us." If you're in Christ, you're not under a curse—period.

The only people under the curse of the Law are those trying to keep the Law. If you're going to demand the tithe, you better also demand circumcision, Sabbath-keeping, and animal sacrifices. You can't have it both ways.

Freedom to Give

Does this mean you shouldn't give? Absolutely not. It means you're free to give—not out of fear, but out of love. Not to earn God's blessing, but because you've already received it.

Give as the Spirit leads. Give cheerfully. Give generously. But don't let anyone put you back under the bondage of a Law that Christ has already fulfilled.

Declare This Over Yourself

I am not under the Law. I am under grace. My giving is not motivated by fear of a curse, but by the overflow of a grateful heart. I give freely, cheerfully, and generously—not because I have to, but because I want to.
